Our School

The New School at West Heath is an independent specialist school for students whose mainstream schooling has broken down for a variety of reasons.

It is set in 32 acres of parkland on the edge of the historic town of Sevenoaks. The old school house was originally built in the 18th century and was the home of the Elliot family. It became a school in 1932.

It boasts a modern teaching block for Key Stage 4 with light, airy purpose built classrooms, several common rooms and a library and careers room. In the impressive “old” house, recently totally refurbished, there are more classrooms used for Key Stage 3 students with a separate suite for post 16, learning support and more common rooms. Between these two areas is a range of specialist rooms; two science laboratories, a music-recording studio, food and nutrition suite, a dance studio (where Diana Princess of Wales used to practise) and an ICT room. There is a technology room and the art block is north facing giving consistently good light for drawing and painting. Adjacent is a graphic studio. In addition there are a number of small rooms for individual literacy and language and communication support.

The school hall, also recently refurbished with air conditioning, has state of the art stage lighting and sound systems. This is where we meet for whole school assemblies, special celebrations, drama performances and concerts. The drama hall has state of the art stage lighting and sound systems. The Ruth Rudge Sports Centre features a large, modern, four badminton court sports hall and an indoor heated swimming pool. Outside there are sports pitches and hard tennis courts.

The school has a suite of dining rooms in which staff and students enjoy lunch together. School lunches are popular and highly acclaimed and are provided at no additional cost.

Our students are accommodated in five colt bungalows with individual bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen-dining room. Senior students live in a specially converted semi-detached house in the grounds.

We have easy access to London’s theatres, museums and libraries and events, being only 35 minutes by train to Charing Cross. Our position also gives us access to many regional and national facilities.
