Partnership with parents

The school values the importance of developing close and co-operative relationships with parents and carers. We actively encourage open and regular contact between school and home. On occasions it may be appropriate for home visits to be made.

We aim to ensure that our school is responsive and proactive in meeting individual student’s needs. During their time with us we support them in their development as potentially wise and responsible parents, and active citizens of the future.

It is essential to the success of our students, both emotionally and academically, that both home and school pull in the same direction. The experts on the student are the parents or carers. They are the ones who make the life-long difference to their child and we are here to support and help them.

We have an open door policy and parents and carers are welcome to visit at any time although it is always advisable to make an appointment first to ensure that the people you need to see are available. We welcome as much contact as possible and bearing in mind the distances travelled by some students the telephone maybe the easiest form of contact. Parents or carers should not hesitate to contact us with any matter of concern, no matter how trivial it may seem.

There are Parent evenings for each year group, usually in the spring term when subject teachers will be available for a formal consultation. Families are invited to the summer Prize Giving and Leavers' Day and also the GCSE Presentation Day. We have many informal events throughout the year to which all are invited.

We have many and varied outings from school. We have a policy that no child will be penalised from taking part because of financial difficulty but at the same time we may have to cancel a trip if we cannot make it financially viable. Anyone suffering financial hardship should contact the school administrator.

If students, parents or carers feel unfairly treated they are encouraged to speak to a member of staff who will try to resolve the situation speedily.

If students, parents or carers still feel the situation has not been resolved they should go to one of the three school Vice Principals or they may choose to contact the Principal directly. If the matter is still not resolved the Chair of the Student Services Committee should be contacted.

Policy documents, syllabuses, schemes of work, National Curriculum and Ofsted documentation can be made available on request to the Vice Principal - Education.

Work at home

In order to receive the maximum benefit from the courses we do, therefore, provide our students with some homework. We recognise, however, that some students who come to us are not used to a study routine and find working at home difficult, especially to begin with. We would never want homework to become an issue causing conflict. Nevertheless, work at home does provide an opportunity for students to complete assignments, extend topics by taking them deeper and also to practice and consolidate skills. Personal planners are available to help students keep track of important information.

Success and the progress that naturally follows, is encouraged by concentrating on the positive and rewarding the student appropriately.
